The authors introduce sorne ideas on the nature conservation before studying the case of a mountain area, the Central Pyrenees, Spain. On high mountain, in spite of a very important number of endemic plant species, the flora is well conserved because most of the species are living on screes and cliffs. On the other hand, the woods were intensively exploited and many oftheir species are now slowly recovering. Final1y, the river canyons of the area are frequent and they shelter many endemic plants, such as the rarest species of the Pyrenees, Borderea chouardii. Attention must be pay to these plants when projecting new roads or improving the ancient ways passing trought the defilees. |
