Our interest has been focused on particular specimens of Dryopteris of the villarii-sub-montana complex from certain localities in the Central Pyrenees of France which were morphologically identical with the alpine diploid D. villarii. A chromosome count of plants from these populations showed them to be tetraploid and therefore D. submontana-, this indicates that this group shows a strong morphological variability, making in certain cases chromosome counts necessary for definite identification. The Pyrenean distribution of this South European calcicole montane tetraploid species is mainly in the Central and Western Pyrenees, both in France and in Spain |
