Species reproductive traits are especially important in determining the potential of species to establish and to persist following disturbance. Herein, I review available literature on relationships among disturbance, species life histories, and seed fates in tundra environments. Research conducted on these relationships in alpine herbfield vegetation on the Beartooth Plateau, Montana, over the past 9 yr by my colleagues and myself is synthesized. In tundra environments, species reproductive capacities are often similar to those in more temperate environments, but short, cool growing seasons constrain seed production and reduce seedling growth and survival. Highly variable growing season conditions result in large differences in seed production and seedling establishment among years. On disturbed sites, disturbance characteristics determine the seed and seedling environment and influence rates of establishment. In these windy environments, relationships among soil surface characteristics and seed morphological attributes determine both the horizontal and vertical movement of seeds on exposed soils. Once seeds are incorporated into the soil, soil physical and chemical properties determine temperature and nutrient regimes and have the greatest effects on seed germination and seedling growth and survival. Examining the seed fates of herbfield species with varying life histories illustrates that the identities of species that establish following disturbance are largely predictable from their reproductive traits. Disturbance characteristics determine the success of different reproductive strategies and significantly influence community structure. Chambers Année de publication : 1989 Article en page(s) : 304-308 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Percent of seeds filled for alpine grasses and seed viability and longevity for alpine grasses and forbs with different life history and physiological traits were evaluated for seeds collected in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986 on the Beartooth Plateau, Mont. Significant (p<0.001) differences existed in the percent of seeds filled for grass species and in the seed viability of both grass and forb species among years. The high variability in seed viability among years is attributed to the severe and unpredictable nature of the environment. Seed viability differed among species within most years. In general, grass species had lower and more variable seed viability than forb species. Low seed viability years for the grass species coincided with low seed fill years, indicating poor seed development. Longevity of seeds collected in 1983 varied among species and was related to seed characteristics and the overall life history and physiological traits of individual species. Seed longevity of species with life history and physiological traits typical of late seral species was shorter than that of species with traits typical of early seral species.
