A total of 1104 ecological and phytosociological relevés from the floodplain of the Upper Rhine Valley, south-western Germany, were analysed using multivariate methods. Twenty sample groups were classified and ecologically described. Their floristic und ecological relationship to further specified syntaxonomic units was investigated using a second multivariate approach. The results are the basis for a new proposal for the classification and syntaxonomy of the floodplain forests in the Upper Rhine Valley. On the lower floodplain levels, the Salicetum albae occurs, which we propose to subdivide into three subtypes. Even the forests on the lower hardwood floodplain levels can be accomodated in this association. In place of the Querco-Ulmetum Issler 1924, which is treated here as a 'nomen ambiguum' the Ulmo-Fraxinetum (Tx. apud Lohmeyer 1952) nom. invers. Oberd. 1953 was reinstated as the principal forest community on sandy and loamy soils of the Upper Rhine floodplain. Three different subtypes are distinguishable depending on inundation and water capacity of the soils. When inundation of the floodplain ceases, the Carici albae-Tilietum cordatae is the late successional forest community on the sandy and gravelly soils of the most southern part of the Upper Rhine Valley. In the area north of Breisach and Marckolsheim, Fagus sylvatica communities occur on ancient flooded sites far away from recent inundation and ground water. |
