In central Europe, the Cystopteris fragilis complex comprises three species which are difficult to recognize by their overall morphology (Cystopteris alpina [Lam.] Desv., C. dickieana R. Sim, C. fragilis [L.] Bernh.). C. dickieana and C. fragilis are especially polymorphic and they can only be separated by using their perispore structure. In Germany, C. dickieana is a very rare species. It has been known based on a historical record in the vicinity of Berchtesgaden and much later from an extant population in the southern Black Forest; recently it was also found the Nahe valley. As it is impossible to discriminate C. dickieana and C. fragilis in the field, C. dickieana might possibly be more frequent than is presently known. The existing colonies in the southern Black Forest and in the Nahe valley were characterized by investigating ecological, population-biological and phytosociological parameters. During cytological examination plants from the southern Black Forest turned out to be tetraploid. As plants from all three German locations agree with respect to their spore and stomate length, it might be suspected that the plants from Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate also represent the tetraploid cytotype. |
