Ellenberg-type indicator values are expert-based rankings of plant species according to their ecological optima on main environmental gradients. Here we extend the indicator-value system proposed by Heinz Ellenberg and co-authors for Central Europe by incorporating other systems of Ellenberg-type indicator values (i.e., those using scales compatible with Ellenberg values) developed for other European regions. Our aim is to create a harmonized data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values applicable at the European scale.
Methods
We collected European data sets of indicator values for vascular plants and selected 13 data sets that used the nine-, ten- or twelve-degree scales defined by Ellenberg for light, temperature, moisture, reaction, nutrients and salinity. We compared these values with the original Ellenberg values and used those that showed consistent trends in regression slope and coefficient of determination. We calculated the average value for each combination of species and indicator values from these data sets. Based on species’ co-occurrences in European vegetation plots, we also calculated new values for species that were not assigned an indicator value.
Results
We provide a new data set of Ellenberg-type indicator values for 8908 European vascular plant species (8168 for light, 7400 for temperature, 8030 for moisture, 7282 for reaction, 7193 for nutrients, and 7507 for salinity), of which 398 species have been newly assigned to at least one indicator value.
Conclusions
The newly introduced indicator values are compatible with the original Ellenberg values. They can be used for large-scale studies of the European flora and vegetation or for gap-filling in regional data sets. The European indicator values and the original and taxonomically harmonized regional data sets of Ellenberg-type indicator values are available in the Supporting Information and the Zenodo repository.Identifiant : DOI : 10.1111/jvs.13168 Permalink : https://biblio.cbnpmp.fr/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=155707

[CBNPMP-Thématique] Livre RougeRésumé : The European Red List of Habitats provides an overview of the risk of collapse (degree of endangerment) of marine, terrestrial and freshwater habitats in the European Union (EU28) and adjacent regions (EU28+), based on a consistent set of criteria and categories and detailed data and expertise from involved countries. Amongst terrestrial and freshwater habitats the highest percentage of threatened types (categories Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable) was found amongst mires and bogs (85% in the EU28, 54% in the EU28+), followed by grasslands (53%, 49%), freshwater habitats (46%, 38%) and coastal habitats (45%, 43%). Relatively low percentages of heathland and scrub, forests, and sparsely vegetated habitats were assessed to be threatened. Overall the amount of threatened habitats was higher in the EU28 (36%) than in the wider range of the EU28+ (31%). The European Red List of Habitats provides extensive additional information on habitat classification and definition, pressures and threats, conservation and restorability of habitats, distribution, status and trends in individual countries, and sub-habitats that may possibly be threatened. The information provided can inform and support European nature and biodiversity policy in a variety of ways, particularly in relation to the EU2020 Biodiversity Strategy targets. Further applications include the revitalisation of the EUNIS habitat classification, synergies with the Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services initiative, and the improvement of Red List methodologies. [CBNPMP-Thématique] Plantes subspontanées, naturalisées, envahissantesMots-clés : Phytolacca americana L., 1753 Résumé : Invasive species are a worldwide problem, and the germination process is useful to understand the characteristics that allow alien species to be invasive and their projected response to global climate change. Phytolacca americana is one of the most invasive plants in Italy, and we tested, for different populations (from different altitudes) how light, temperature, and cold stratification affect seed germination. According to our analyses, P. americana produces an exceptionally high number of seeds that may potentially survive in soil for extended periods. Seeds subjected to cold stratification and exposed to warmer temperatures, both in light and darkness, exhibited faster germination, with a higher germination rate and a shorter T50. Seeds collected at the highest elevation (337 m a.s.l.) have germinated in all tested thermal conditions, albeit with a lower germination percentage and a longer T50 compared with seeds collected at lower elevations (5 and 50 m a.s.l.) and tested under warm and moderate temperatures. In general, P. americana seems to adapt to moderate-warm temperatures (at low elevations) and moderate-cool temperatures (at highest elevations) and appears to increase germination with seeds exposed to cold stratification. These results, in a scenario of climate change, show that the invasiveness of P. americana may increase in the future.
