[CBNPMP-Thématique] MessicoleRésumé : Agricultural intensification and changing landscape structure led to decreasing numbers of arable flora and fauna during the last decades. To counteract these declines, arable plant diversity needs to be restored. It is important to promote regional plant communities including endangered species to ensure adaption to agricultural landscapes. Therefore, this study examines the development of arable plant diversity, crop yield and the reintroduction success of rare arable plants (RAPs) under different practical farming strategies in cereals from 2019 to 2021 in southwestern Germany.
Farming strategies varied regarding weed control intensity (none, mechanical, herbicide with and without efficiency gap), fertilisation (mineral and none) and row spacing (12.5 cm and 20 cm). Additionally, two different seed mixtures containing RAP and common species were used for reintroduction: one commercially available and another self-composed. Reintroduction success was quite high with more than 80% establishment rate. Species numbers doubled in all treatments over time, except the one with herbicide application, with on average 8–10 species emerging from the soil seed bank. Reintroduction of RAP increased arable plant species richness further up to 37 species. The site-adapted mixture showed in the end a site-typical weed community. Yield was significantly lower in treatments with reintroduction via sown mixtures and no weed control, losing on average 65% yield. The reintroduction of RAP was successful and accompanied by an increasing floral diversity, however, with a simultaneous yield loss. Financial incentives or subsidies are therefore still necessary to compensate yield loss for reintroduction and conservation efforts.

[CBNPMP-Thématique] MessicoleRésumé : Highly developed weed control strategies manage to suppress weeds and therefore contribute to a shift in weed community composition as well as a decline in rare weed occurrence. To counteract this decline fields containing rare weed species are taken under contract for preservation purposes, however only time limited. We mapped the weed flora in cereals of conventional (K) and organic (O) fields as well as current (V) and former (E) rare species conservation fields in the Gäu region of Southwestern Germany in 2016. We found similar weed species numbers in O (24 – 38 species) and V (36 – 43 species) and in C (7 – 17 species) and E (13 – 15 species). Weed community composition varied considerably between fields. By performing a CCA (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) we were able to explain 23% of the weed community composition by the parameters seeding rate and nitrogen fertilization. Nevertheless species such as Alopecurus myosuroides, Geranium dissectum, Papaver rhoeas, Poa trivialis and Veronica persica showed a high consistency in all observations. Rare and endangered weed species like Papaver argemone, Consolida regalis, Ranunculus arvensis and Galium tricornutum were only present in V and occasionally E and O. This indicates a rapid decline of weed species diversity after contracts expire, which slowly leads to a similar floral composition as in conventional fields. Therefore new concepts for constant protection of rare weed species should be put into action to ensure conservation success. [CBNPMP-Thématique] MessicoleRésumé : Questions : Two scientific disciplines, vegetation science and weed science, study arable weed vegetation, which has seen a strong diversity decrease in Europe over the last decades. We compared two collections of plot-based vegetation records originating from these two disciplines. The aim was to check the suitability of the collections for joint analysis and for addressing research questions from the opposing domains. We asked: are these collections complementary? If so, how can they be used for joint analysis? Location : Europe. Methods : We compared 13 311 phytosociological relevés and 13 328 records from weed science, concerning both data collection properties and the recorded species richness. To deal with bias in the data, we also analysed different subsets (i.e., crops, geographical regions, organic vs conventional fields, center vs edge plots). Results : Records from vegetation science have an average species number of 19.0 ± 10.4. Metadata on survey methodology or agronomic practices are rare in this collection. Records from weed science have an average species number of 8.5 ± 6.4. They are accompanied by extensive methodological information. Vegetation science records and the weed science records taken at field edges or from organic fields have similar species numbers. The collections cover different parts of Europe but the results are consistent in six geographical subsets and the overall data set. The difference in species numbers may be caused by differences in methodology between the disciplines, i.e., plot positioning within fields, plot sizes, or survey timing. Conclusion : This comparison of arable weed data that were originally sampled with a different purpose represents a new effort in connecting research between vegetation scientists and weed scientists. Both collections show different aspects of weed vegetation, which means the joint use of the data is valuable as it can contribute to a more complete picture of weed species diversity in European arable landscapes.
