Ex DC. Résumé : In this study we analyze the importance of seed germinability in the conservation of Aster pyrenaeus, a high priority species of Spain and France. In 2009 we collected fresh seeds in Bulnes (Cordillera Cantábrica) and performed germination tests in conditions of light (photoperiod 12/12 h, constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30 ºC, alternate temperatures of 25/15 ºC) and darkness (20 and 25/15 ºC). The optimal conditions for germination were then used to analyze the effect of cold stratification (4 weeks at 5 ºC). The seeds germinated better in light than in darkness, with a maximum germination rate (> 95%) at 20 ºC after both fresh and stratified treatments. In optimal conditions, stratified seeds showed not significant differences with regard to the fresh seeds. The high rates of contaminated seeds during germination and their limited viability suggest the need for a higher effort in refining seed collection and conservation in germplasm banks.
