Phenotypic responses, such as earlier phenology in response to climate warming, have been repeatedly observed in the field. The recent pollinator decline is also expected to change selection on reproductive traits in flowering plants. However, it remains unclear whether short-term adaptation of plant reproductive strategies occurs in response to global change. In this study, we report the evolution of some important reproductive traits of the annual self-incompatible weed Centaurea cyanus. In a common garden experiment, we germinated stored seeds, sampled 18 years apart from the same location, in a region where warmer springs and indices of pollinator decline have been reported. Compared to the ancestral population (1992), our results showed that plants of the descendant population (2010) flowered earlier and also produced larger capitula with longer receptivity and a larger floral display. QST -FST comparisons indicated that natural selection has likely contributed to the evolution of some of the traits investigated. Lower FST within temporal samples than among spatial samples further suggests a limited role of gene flow from neighbouring populations. We therefore propose that trait shifts could partly be due to adaptation to global change. [CBNPMP-Thèmes] MessicoleRésumé : Agricultural intensification has led to dramatic diversity losses and impoverishment of the arable vegetation in much of Europe. We analyzed the status of farmland phytodiversity and its determinants in 2016 in northwest Germany by surveying 200 conventionally managed fields cultivated with seven crops. The study was combined with an analysis of edaphic (soil yield potential), agronomic (crop cover, fertilizer and herbicide use) and landscape factors (adjacent habitats). In total, we recorded 150 non-crop plant species, many of them nitrophilous generalist species, while species of conservation value were almost completely absent. According to a post-hoc pairwise comparison of the mixed model results, the cultivation of rapeseed positively influenced non-crop plant species richness as compared to winter cereals (wheat, barley, rye and triticale; data pooled), maize or potato. The presence of grassy strips and ditch margins adjacent to fields increased plant richness at field edges presumably through spillover effects. In the field interiors, median values of non-crop plant richness and cover were only 2 species and 0.5% cover across all crops, and at the field edges 11 species and 4% cover. Agricultural intensification has wiped out non-crop plant life nearly completely from conventionally managed farmland, except for a narrow, floristically impoverished field edge strip. The studies also detected that common species were more favored by organic farming than rare ones. In a farm scale study in southern Bavaria, Germany, we analyzed how the conversion to organic farming changed arable plant communities over a 23-years period and questioned the impact on weed management and species conservation. Vegetation sampling started two years before this conver-sion. At the end of the study period, crop cover had slightly decreased but yields of winter cereals (5.2 t/ha) still achieved 78% of the pre-organic harvest. Arable plant cover increased from 2 to 40% and the soil seed banks enlarged from 4200 to 33,300 seeds m-². Total numbers of plant species increased by 46% at the plot level and by 22% at the farm level, plant species characteristic of arable fields in-creased by 50% and 19%, respectively. Populations of both threatened and problematic plant species clearly profited from the conversion. Our results generally confirm that organic farming benefits plant biodiversity in arable land. Such benefits being more pronounced at the plot scale verifies previous studies, however, these effects were also visible over the whole arable area of the farm. A significant increase in the cover of insect-pollinated plants indicated that organic management can also support ecosystem functions. Our data prove that long-term organic farming can increase nature conservation value of the arable flora with only a moderate setback of crop yields.
