"Wernershohe" (Hildesheim district, Lower Saxony) is a plateau without woods in the Sieben Berge mountains near Alfeld. It is surrounded by limestone grassland and beech forests. Because of extensive cultivation, well developed stand of Papaveri-Melandrietum noctiflori with many rare weed species can be found on this shallow limestone soil. In order not to endanger these weed communities through the cessation of cultivation, 32 hectares of arable land have been cultivated for five years in accordance with the protection of endangered weeds. The preferences of winter crops and cereals appropriate to the sites, the low density of seeding, and the rejection of pesticides and reduced fertilizing within the framework of biological farming have contributed to a recovery and spreading of Papaveri-Melandrietum noctiflori. The community-specific development in the interior of stands, as well as the high number of endangered (Red List) weeds underline the wider importance of this area for the protection of fields weeds. |
