Location : Europe. Methods : A data set of vegetation-plot records was compiled to include various bog types over most of the European continent. An unsupervised classification (beta-flexible linkage method, Sørensen distance measure) and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) ordination were applied. Formal definitions of syntaxa based on species presence and covers, and respecting the results of the unsupervised classification, were developed and included in a classification expert system. Results : The Oxycocco-Sphagnetea class, its two orders (Sphagno-Ericetalia tetralicis and Sphagnetalia medii) and seven compositionally distinct alliances were formally defined. In addition to the syntaxa included in EuroVegChecklist, three new alliances were distinguished: Rubo chamaemori-Dicranion elongati (subarctic polygon and palsa mires); Erico mackaianae-Sphagnion papillosi (blanket bogs of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula); and Sphagno baltici-Trichophorion cespitosi (boreal bog lawns). The latter alliance is newly described in this article. Conclusions : This first pan-European formalized classification of European bog vegetation partially followed the system presented in EuroVegChecklist, but suggested three additional alliances. One covers palsa and polygon mires, one covers Iberian bogs with endemics and one fills the syntaxonomical gap for lawn microhabitats in boreal bogs. A classification expert system has been developed, which allows assignment of vegetation plots to the types described.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : [CBNPMP-Thématique] Télédétection Résumé : Northern peatland vegetation exhibits fine-scale spatial and spectral heterogeneity that can potentially be captured with uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) data due to their ultra-high spatial resolution (<10 cm). From this perspective, the contribution of different spectral sensors in mapping various vegetation characteristics has not been thoroughly investigated. We delineated spatial patterns of plant community clusters, plant functional types (PFTs), and selected plant species with UAV hyperspectral (HS), UAV multispectral (MS), and airborne LiDAR (light detection and ranging) topography (TP) data in two northern peatlands. We conducted random forest (RF) regressions in a geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) framework and compared the relative contributions of the different datasets. In the best regression models, the percentage of explained variance was 24–74 % (RMSE:0.24–0.31), 40–90 % (RMSE:0.12–0.41), and 18–90 % (RMSE:0.03–0.40) for plant community clusters, PFTs, and plant species, respectively. The MS-TP combination had, in many cases, the highest performance, while HS-based models had better performance for some plant community clusters, PFTs, and plant species. TP features were useful only in certain situations. Overall, our results suggest that UAV MS imagery combined with TP data outperformed or performed at least almost as well as the models using UAV HS data and while all data combinations are capable for fine-scale detection of vegetation in northern peatlands. [CBNPMP-Thématique] Livre RougeRésumé : The European Red List of Habitats provides an overview of the risk of collapse (degree of endangerment) of marine, terrestrial and freshwater habitats in the European Union (EU28) and adjacent regions (EU28+), based on a consistent set of criteria and categories and detailed data and expertise from involved countries. Amongst terrestrial and freshwater habitats the highest percentage of threatened types (categories Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable) was found amongst mires and bogs (85% in the EU28, 54% in the EU28+), followed by grasslands (53%, 49%), freshwater habitats (46%, 38%) and coastal habitats (45%, 43%). Relatively low percentages of heathland and scrub, forests, and sparsely vegetated habitats were assessed to be threatened. Overall the amount of threatened habitats was higher in the EU28 (36%) than in the wider range of the EU28+ (31%). The European Red List of Habitats provides extensive additional information on habitat classification and definition, pressures and threats, conservation and restorability of habitats, distribution, status and trends in individual countries, and sub-habitats that may possibly be threatened. The information provided can inform and support European nature and biodiversity policy in a variety of ways, particularly in relation to the EU2020 Biodiversity Strategy targets. Further applications include the revitalisation of the EUNIS habitat classification, synergies with the Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services initiative, and the improvement of Red List methodologies. This control is particularly evident in the case of abundant herbivores, such as reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus), whose grazing patterns are affected by management. Here, we tested how different reindeer grazing practices on the border between Finland and Norway impact the occurrence of willow (Salix spp.) dominated patches, their above-ground biomass (AGB) and the ability of willows to form dense thickets. We used a combination
of multispectral and RGB imagery obtained from unoccupied aerial vehicles field data and an ensemble of machine-learning models, which allowed us to model the occurrence of plant community types (Overall accuracy = 0.80), AGB fractions (maximum R2 = 0.90) and topsoil moisture (maximum R2 = 0.89). With this combination of approaches, we show that willows are kept in a browsing-trap under spring and early summer grazing by reindeer, growing mostly small and scattered in the landscape. In contrast, willows under the winter grazing regime formed dense stands, particularly within riparian areas. We confirm this pattern using a random forest willow habitat distribution model based on topographical parameters.
