[CBNPMP-Thématique] Plantes en médecine et pharmacieMots-clés : Arnica montana L. Résumé : L’Arnica montana figure aujourd’hui au palmarès des plantes médicinales de grande notoriété. Cette Asréracée des montagnes d’Europe se fait connaître dès l’Antiquité et c’est au Moyen-âge qu’on la mentionne dans les écrits de botanique et de médecine pour ses qualités thérapeutiques. Depuis, son utilisation traditionnelle est toujours courante. A l’heure actuelle, nous l’utilisons aussi bien en homéopathie qu’en phytothérapie pour soigner les suites de chocs, de chutes, de coups. Sa principale propriété est antiinflammatoire. Elle résorbe les ecchymoses (bleus), les bosses, et apaise les douleurs musculaires, ligamentaires et tendineuses. On l’utilise aussi en bain de bouche contre les affections buccales et les maux de gorge. Victime de son succès, l’Arnica est aujourd’hui une espèce protégée dans de nombreux pays et sa cueillette suit des règlementations très strictes. En effet, la sur-cueillette, l’agriculture intensive et la fertilisation excessive des sols par les ovins et les engrais ont chassé l’Arnica de son biotope naturel. Des essais de mise en culture sont actuellement en cours pour pallier à cette diminution préoccupante de la ressource naturelle mais les résultats restent à ce jour peu concluants tant les exigeances de cette espèce pour sa culture sont importantes. Une autre espèce d’Arnica, l’Arnica chamissonis, originaire d’Amérique, beaucoup plus facile à cultiver et de composition chimique proche de l’Arnica montana pourrait être une alternative intéressante. Des études sont en cours pour s’assurer de son efficacité thérapeutique. Certains pays, comme l’Allemagne, l’ont déjà faite rentrer dans leur Pharmacopée. Résumé : Phenotypic and genetic variation of the rare plant species Arnica montana L. were investigated in populations which had been fragmented by afforestation since 1930 in the Rhön, a mountain region in Central Germany. The aim of the study was to analyse whether small populations show less genetic variation and a lower fitness than large populations. Morphological and reproductive traits from eleven Arnica-populations of different size were examined in the field. Principal component analysis (PCA) reduced the nine traits measured to two main components, one of which correlated with phenotypic traits of the maternal plants in the field while the other corresponded to traits associated with offspring production, weight and germinability. The latter component, which we considered to be fitness-related, was significantly positively correlated with population size. We screened four isozymes to study the genetic variation of the populations. The mean number of alleles per locus (A), the mean observed heterozygosity (Ho), and the mean expected heterozygosity (He) were used to measure genetic variation. Population size and genetic variation were not significantly correlated. In addition, there were no significant correlations between the two main components of the PCA and genetic variation when controlling for population size. The results of the study suggest that small populations of plants exhibit a reduced reproductive success which could not be attributed to genetic erosion. It might be attributed to the longevity of the clonal A. montana that the genetic structure of the populations examined has remained unaffected by the habitat fragmentation so far. In addition, gene flow has probably still been taking place between the fragmented populations. Possibly, the reduced reproductive success of plants in the small populations was caused by missing availability of cross-compatible pollen because of a reduced set of S-alleles due to genetic drift. Furthermore, environmental maternal effects may have played an important role in reproduction and germinability. Résumé : Arnica montana (L.) is an endangered and endemic medicinal plant species in Europe. The pressure on natural sources of this plant is alleviated by a suitable use of arnica resources in the European region and introduction into cultivation. The objective of this study was to describe the impact of different ways of plant propagation and introduction on the growth and reproduction mode of this species. During the six consecutive years of the field experiment, the vegetative and reproductive traits were monitored, and survival time was assessed. The particular ways of arnica plant propagation and introduction determined all the intrinsic species traits and plant survival. The values of the characteristics studied indicated good acclimatization of the arnica ecotype to the climatic conditions of eastern Poland. Practical implications from the data presented here include the possibility of using the presented modes of arnica propagation and introduction in the short- and long-term perspective of arnica cultivation, which can give a possibility of better adjustment of raw material production.
